San Antonio Public Library Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Virtually

- The San Antonio Public Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting various events virtually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
- Honoring Hispanic culture, the San Antonio Public Library will be hosting various segments, ranging from cooking traditional Mexican cuisine to featuring various poets from Voces Cósmicas
The San Antonio Public Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting various events virtually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. All events will be hosted through Zoom, with registration for each event available on their website.
Honoring Hispanic culture, the San Antonio Public Library will be hosting various segments, ranging from cooking traditional Mexican cuisine to featuring various poets from Voces Cósmicas. Below is a list of the remaining upcoming events and the respective dates for each:
Voces Cosmicas Presents: Sueños, Saturday, Oct. 10 from 2-3:30 p.m.
Day of the Dead Exhibition Virtual Tour with National Museum of Mexican Art, Saturday, Oct. 10 from 2-3 p.m.
Noon Time Helping of Hispanic Heritage Cooking, Thursday, October 15 from noon-1 p.m.
In addition to the events above, the library has opened up the grounds of the Cortez Branch Library to a viewing of All Around Us by Xelena Gonzalez in order to make its efforts to honor Hispanic Heritage Month accessible to children. The library asks that patrons continue to practice proper social distancing as they gather on the property.

The library also highlights a literary zine titled Altar-ing: A Latinx Memoir Workshop Series. The digital download comes with various stories from different Latinx “artists, teachers, writers, cultural preservationists, DJs, researchers, mothers, tias/os/xs, and spiritual activists.” A booklet filled with traditional recipes, poems, projects and different homages to Latinx culture, Altar-ing showcases the different aspects of Latinx culture that can bring the community altogether. Other efforts to implement Hispanic culture into the event include a Nicho bag, described as a “type of folk art popular throughout Latin America.” These come with a variety of crafting items, including a jewelry box, decorative foils and rhinestones, as well as a cardstock sheet with add-on nicho items.
