WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Shootings on the East Side occurred on Thursday and Friday, leaving three people dead and one person in critical condition
  • District 2 City Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan said she will ask the city manager to have the police chief do a district wide sweep and focus on the murder rate increase

In response to the violence that occurred on the city’s East Side on Thursday, District 2 City Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan released the following statement:

“The escalation in violence and crime in our district is alarming,” she said Friday. “We have taken so many strides to combat the issues and now we are faced with acts that have set us back.”

On Thursday, the bodies of two males between the ages of 16 and 20 were found just after 2:00 a.m. as an officer was making his patrol rounds. The bodies were found laying on the street at Fredonia Street and Piedmont Avenue near Virginia Boulevard, according to police officials. Both victims appeared to have been shot at another location, then dumped on Fredonia.

“We have lost too many lives prematurely to senseless killings,” Andrews-Sullivan continued. “Lives lost over colors that cannot be owned, neighborhoods that no longer exist, drugs that only destroy and over stares that can be ignored. We must get back to uplifting each other. We rallied and marched for justice but we must be justly to each other. We are losing lives daily to a virus we cannot see but yet and still we are losing even more by killing each other. Now is the time we need to sit still and lift each other! Enough is enough and I am asking our city manager to have the police chief do a district wide sweep and focus on the murder rate increase.”

On Friday evening, there was another East Side shooting. A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s were shot at the corner of Hays and Hudson. Police were called about 9 p.m. to the scene. The man was pronounced dead, the woman is in critical condition.
